Behind every combat operation of the US Army during the liberation of the Netherlands lay a logistical organization that surpassed everything previously seen in military history in terms of scale and complexity. The US Army that advanced through Europe in 1944 and 1945 was not just a fighting force, but also a rolling city, a floating hospital, and a mobile factory all at once.
The scale of that organization was staggering. Each American infantry division of approximately 15,000 men required hundreds of tons of supplies daily: ammunition, fuel, food, medical supplies, spare parts, and clothing. Those supplies had to be brought in via a chain that began in American factories, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, passed through English and later Norman ports, and reached the front via a network of roads, railways, and waterways.
