The Atlantic Wall was the extensive German defense system along the European Atlantic coast, but for the Dutch coastal population, it represented something that went far beyond a military construction. It was a drastic occupation measure that permanently changed the daily lives of thousands of people.
From 1942, the occupying forces began to systematically militarize the Dutch coastline. Beach areas, dunes, and harbors were closed off and transformed into defense zones filled with bunkers, tank barriers, barbed wire, and minefields. For the residents of coastal towns such as Scheveningen, Zandvoort, Katwijk, and dozens of smaller fishing villages, this meant forced departure from their own homes. Families who had sometimes lived on the coast for generations were occasionally ordered to pack their belongings and leave within a few days. What they left behind was sometimes looted or demolished to make room for military installations.
The construction of the Atlantic Wall in the Netherlands required enormous amounts of labor and material. Tens of thousands of workers, partly voluntary and partly forced, worked on the construction of bunkers and fortifications. Dutch contractors and laborers were deployed, sometimes under direct coercion. The concrete poured into the Dutch coastline represents one of the largest architectural interventions the country underwent during the occupation.
For the fishing population, the militarization of the coast had another direct consequence: the fishing ban on large parts of the North Sea and the IJsselmeer. Fishermen who lived off the sea lost their source of livelihood. In a time of increasing scarcity, this hit families hard. Food that was normally harvested from the sea became scarce, while the occupying forces simultaneously sealed off the coastal areas hermetically.
After the liberation in 1945, the displaced coastal residents returned to places they hardly recognized. Houses had been destroyed or occupied by soldiers, beaches were littered with minefields that continued to claim victims years later, and the familiar coastline had been physically altered by bunkers and fortifications.
