Medical personnel\u2014known as medics in the U.S. Army and stretcher bearers in the British Army\u2014worked in close proximity to the fighting without being permitted to fire weapons themselves. They were protected by the Red Cross emblem on their helmets and sleeves, though in practice, they were frequently targeted by shelling that made no distinctions.<br\/>The army ambulance was the final link in a medical chain that began with the individual soldier on the battlefield. A wounded man was first treated by his own medic, who applied emergency dressings on-site and administered morphine to dull the pain. He was then carried or dragged to a battalion aid station, a temporary medical post situated as close to the front line as safety allowed. From there, the wounded were transported by army ambulance to a field hospital behind the front lines, where surgeons performed operations in tents or requisitioned buildings that had been converted into operating rooms.<br\/>This chain only worked if every link functioned, and the army ambulance was the link that combined the most variables: the time pressure of rapid transport, the medical necessity of stable transit for critically injured patients, and the danger of driving on roads that were not yet fully secured. Ambulance crews learned to strike a balance between speed and caution\u2014between the desire to reach the field hospital as quickly as possible and the need to avoid taking risks with the fragile cargo they carried.<br\/>For the Dutch civilian population who experienced the liberation, army ambulances held a unique significance. Alongside the combat vehicles that brought freedom, these white vehicles marked with a red cross served as a symbol of another side of the war: not the force that drove out the enemy, but the care that sought to mitigate the cost of that liberation.
