Legacy
You may choose to leave something from your estate to a charitable cause such as the War Museum. To do so,
you can choose between a legacy and/or an inheritance. Below, we briefly explain the difference between
a legacy and an inheritance and provide two examples of a legacy.
When settling your estate, a legacy takes precedence over an inheritance. After all costs,
claims, and legacies have been deducted from your assets, your net estate is divided among the
heirs you have named in your will. An advantage of a legacy is that the
recipient of the legacy is not further involved in the settlement of the estate.
Examples:
Below are examples of how a legacy can be recorded in your will:
EX. 1: ‘I bequeath to the Stichting Oorlogsmuseum Medemblik a sum of X.’
EX. 2: ‘I bequeath to the Stichting Oorlogsmuseum Medemblik vehicle/weapon with chassis/serial number xxxxx
and a sum of X.’
Given that a legacy takes precedence over an inheritance, it is also possible to combine both: to make a legacy
for specific goods and/or an amount, and subsequently include War Museum Medemblik in the
inheritance as well.
